The cat is out of the bag : Reliable DNS Forgery in 2008: Kaminsky’s Discovery [25 Jul 2008|11:14pm]

sarahs_muse
Background to the problem:
"In case you missed it, Dan Kaminsky, DNS and security guru discovered a MAJOR bug in DNS that is...well, no one really knew! However, it was bad enough for all DNS experts around the world and DNS software vendors to fix the problem in what has to be the biggest collective patch ever - without a single leak. Well, hackers being hackers don't need a leak to figure out a problem. They just need a rough idea to fuel the possibilities...

Yes. The information is public. Slashdot has it. Blogs have it. We aren't going to post it, but it shouldn't take you long to find it.

So, is it really THAT bad? Well, yes. Basically, Dan figure out how to poison ANY DNS servers cache. The end result - people using the DNS server will think they are at Paypal, but are really at evilguy.com."

I just got an e-mail from Travel. They've bumped me back up to Springfly and booked my plane tickets. I leave Denver on August 31st and deploy to the Ice from Christchurch on September 4th. First Flight.

I have mixed feelings about this but it's nice to know something concrete.

I have a lot to do in the next five weeks.

Bored. Like really bored. I've felt groggy all day - I slept most of the afternoon away. Guess that doesn't give me any right to complain.

I didn't even get home that late last night. The gig was over by half ten, so I was home dead on midnight. I even had time to go to Tesco and buy cereal. Climbed into bed around half 12 and read some more of Unleashed before lights out.

I have this sudden sense of foreboding.

Child Pornography Apparently Now Includes All Videotaped Images of Minors [25 Jul 2008|07:17pm]

sarahs_muse
"We're now moving into the theater of the absurd, but apparently the legal definition of what constitutes child pornography has now been expanded to include something that any parent of a high school cheerleader probably already has in their possession - a videotape of underage girls doing cheer and/or dance routines for their school. Round em all up!

[ music | Mab - Divine ]

The Nocturnal domino effect got me out of the house last night, down to the Borderline to see Die So Fluid. I was on my own which was fine. At least I was out of the house.

You want to be underground, in a concrete bunker, on one of the hottest days of the year. Bunker is misleading - with it's white-washed walls, fairy-lights and wooden bar, the Borderline reminds me of a restaurant in Tenerife. Suffice to say, it was hot. Like HOT.

Being an idiot, I missed half of Lilygun's opening set. They set the standard for the rest of the evening - no fucking around, these were serious musicians doing what they do best. With their rhythm section missing, the band had called in some favours, but the last minute replacements didn't cut them down. Anna-Christina is a captivating presence, very much the core of a band she writes as well as plays for. Playing the face, she is polite, self-effacing; bordering on shy between songs. "Moonlight" and closer "Diamonds" stood out - beautiful, melodic, with just enough fireworks to get my Canarian tapas bar jumping.

The weirdest part of the night was running into Hannah Daisy. I wasn't sure at first, but the pieces fell into place when I noticed the number of QueenAdreenaT-shirts surrounding me. I had to ask: she was gracious, but horrified. It must have been weird, it was for me; randomly bumping into one of your first myspace friends.

I've never figured out why she's not an actual, jobbing photographer. She spent most of the night flitting from one side of the stage to the other. It was clear who she was there to see. Seeing the back of Mab's guitarist, Marina, I thought it was Katiejane setting up onstage. The Italian/British four piece are high-priestesses of the Ruby Throat lunatic, but the noise they make isn't just hero-worship. I'm not sure what the speakers did, but Mab wanted them to die.

Befitting one of the maddest role-models ever, Psycho Jeremy (lead vocals/bass/girl) hurls growls and howls and honey-sweet melodies around like chainsaws. Kitted out in the same flowers, slips and boots combo, they sure look like Garside's nightmare harem; but their songs drag them kicking and screaming out of her shadow. Songs like "More" and "Pure" smack you around while smudging lipstick all over your face. Something about them reminded me of Black Sabbath too - reaching for something epic, something profound between the power chords.

All of which left Die So Fluid. I'd liked Lilygun and Mab so much, I almost wanted to hate ...Fluid. I didn't want anything to top them.

Lead singer Grog followed guitarist Mr Drew onstage to set up, drawing an almighty roar from the crowd. Dressed in the tightest black catsuit, Grog cuts an imposing, statuesque yet strangely welcoming figure. Mr Drew looked like Till Lindemann, dressed as a darts player. He wore black trainers, with red laces; so I forgave him.

No sweet-nothing hellos, ...Fluid ripped straight into a searing rendition of "Bitterness by Discipline". Mab had it in for the speakers, ...Fluid clearly had designs on our ears. Or just wanted to fuck us in them.

Again, we were facing serious musicians. Grog's' posturing, strutting rock-goddess in the making, didn't interfere with the pitch perfect throat and precision basslines she was throwing out. Eyes drawn to centre stage, Mr Drew was free to put his fretboard to work; drawing sounds some bands can't manage with three guitarists. "Test Confessional" threatened floor and ceiling, Grog constantly pointing towards the heavens, expecting her bass to crack the roof and kill us all. If we noticed, we probably wouldn't have minded. Weirdly, the "weakest" song of the set was "The Kiss and Then The Kick" - the song which got me to the gig in the first place. It was too easy, to sleak and clean on such a raw and visceral setlist. It was the first time it'd ever been played loud, so my hope is it'll find it's place in future shows. Minor gripe, however.

People were conspicuously sweat-swamped. With "Vorvolaka" in the bag, Grog begins splashing the front row with water. 'You can do it to me if you like'. Only one guy took her up on it. Electrocution would have put a serious downer on things.

Icecubes were handed round shortly before "Spawn of Dysfunction". Al Fletcher (drums) thanking us for coming out on such a hot and sweaty night. There was a two song encore - "Disconnected" and "Negahe", which rounded everything off perfectly. For a band who've just had to reschedule their US tour, everything was kept upbeat and energised.

I left, sweat-soaked, and my neck resents me a little bit today. This is the London I love.

Oh, school four.

You never cease to amaze me.

I have so much updating to do, it's not even funny. But I already have to go to bed since Miss Rose is once again coming to pick me up tomorrow to get the first real photo of "Immortal" done, the first teaser playshot of which can be seen below and on my myspace for a limited time, and to hang out with Dani and Jordan. Ahh. What a life I live!

Anyway, g'night.

visiting Florida [24 Jul 2008|08:02pm]

[the_siobhan]
So myself and friends will be road-tripping from Toronto to Florida to go to Convergence and hang out with our friends. We have a week to make a 24-hour drive. And on our travels, we'll be driving pretty much through the entire state of Florida.

Now I'll confess, I've never been a big fan of Florida. (Used to date a guy. It didn't work out. Long story.) Regardless we're going to be tooling around for a couple of days and I'm eager to give the place a second chance.

So where should we go?

We want wildlife. We want natural wonders. We want architecture and art and cheese of the world's biggest ball of twine persuasion. We want good food and fun clubs and rampant silliness. (To give you an idea of our itinerary, we have already scheduled the Creation Museum, Graceland, and the Kennedy Space Center.)

Recommendations! Warnings! Silly stories! Give 'em up, folks.

## fuck my feet hurt ## [24 Jul 2008|08:43am]

[ music | Hawksley Workman - Jealous of your Cigarette ]

You know what kind've walk is not pleasant AT ALL friends? Do you?

The walk from english bay all the way across the cambie bridge to the plaza 500 hotel.

That, my friends, is a fucking death wish for FEET. They are SO sore, SOOOO SOOOORE.
It seems nothing but soreness has happened to my feet since Saturday, the day of the wedding.

Oh yeah, my sister's wedding was pretty awesome. I have to say I looked damn good. Like a giant navy blue whale, but a hot one at that. Although I'm a little worried that the dress was already sagging on me. I don't know if Kathy just forgot to take it in as much as she'd pinned it to be, or if I've lost more weight, but the only thing holding up the dress was my bra hooked through the bra loops in the dress. Pretty sad really.
And holy shit I've spent so much money on that wedding. It was awesome, and I'm happy for my sister, and she looked absofuckinlutely gorgeous, but I'm glad I won't have to spend anymore on it!

Everything's worked out with the Art Institute now. Just waiting to hear back from student loans. As soon as the news comes in about it I'll be working out the rest with the Student Financial Aid department to get budgetted and plan my part time job and course allottment and thinggggsss.

So pretty much Angie was here for my sisters wedding from england, and she brought her boy with her, Rob, and then their friend Dom.
So maybe the only single bridesmaid hooked a blonde boy with an english accent. Oh yeah.
Or, the english tourist hooked a bridesmaid, whichever. :o
After the wedding we all bussed out to vancouver and had drinkings and then went out for dinner and then more drinkings, and then I got lots and lots of cuddles all night and that made me pretty super happy. The next day we went for breakfast and went around and tried to see batman at the imax in langley but it was sold out and Rob didn't wanna see it in normal theatre style so we saw Hellboy 2 instead. The details of the movie I shall leave to your imagination, but it was pretty fun. Then we bussed back to langley centre and they saw me off to a cab and I saw them off back on the bus all the way back to vancouver.
Then works. And I was so tired, because honestly I didn't get near enough sleep. Then more works on tuesday. We, again, were supposed to see batman at the imax but it was sold out again so they bought tickets ahead of time for today (thursday's) showing. However, Nick, a friend I haven't seen in a long while convinced me to go out and hang out anyways, even if just for a couple hours and then going back home again. Well seeing as we were all playing star munchkin and watching amusing things such as House, I noticed I missed the bus to get me home to the last bus ontime. So I crashed with Dom again. But, uh, I somehow drank alot of aftershock, and smirnoff, and didn't eat, and when I woke up in the morning I was SO. SO sick. I don't even remember most of the uh, nights... events. So, alcohol poisoned Katie didn't go to work. Bad! I was in and out of the washroom getting sick every half hour or less. When it was time for Dom to go with Angie out to surrey he asked if I would be okay to come and I said I could try but was a bit shakey, and he just told me to stay in bed and rest. So I did.
When they got back he had some work to do so I wandered upstairs to hang out with Angie and Rob for a while, and then went and got eats at Whitespot because I needed food bad. That's why I figure I got sick. I didn't really... eat the day before :S Not much anyways. Doo doo. Then we came back, I got all showered and me and Ang did out makeups, then we headed out to the fireworks. Dom was really tense about his work and about a project they had runing going live right when the fireworks were starting and, I don't know if it was just that or whether or not I was annoying him somehow, but he told me to give it a rest with the physical contact. I kinda felt a little hurt but I realize it could've just been because he was stressed and so we just watched the fireworks.
Now, the trip back to the hotel was... not fun. First off, trying to find the proper bus stop for the 15 from where we were, and we kept like... going different directions for different reasons. Eventually we made it just to the stop before the cambie bridge, but the bus was completely full. So Dom started walking across the bridge and we tried waiting for the next bus but it was full too so we ended up walking. Got back to the hotel, Dom didn't answer his phone or door, so I crashed on the couch in Angie and Rob's room (and seriously, I was so cold. The couch wasn't uncomfortable or anything, just cold o.o).
Then, a 2 hour and 40 minute ride to work in the morning. I was ten minutes late, but it could've been much, much worse. Thankgod for coffee though because I got all of 3 hours sleep and after recovering from my bad hangover that's not... nearly enough.

Get to see the new batman tonight though which is exciting! I just hope some english boy's cute bottom isn't clenched too tightly for some movie cuddles because I was super sad I didn't get any last night :( If not oh well but he leaves on Saturday so it'd be nice to get it in while we can!

Also, I'm super going to miss Angie, I've really enjoyed hanging out with her again since the weekend. She's been gone for well over a year and yeah. I can't wait until she moves back. She's one of the few females I get along with. Even if she never stops talking about my boobs -.-'

Dog Days. [24 Jul 2008|06:28am]

sarahs_muse

www.citynews.ca/images/2006-08/aug0106-heatsun.jpg

The phrase Dog Days or "the dog days of summer", refers to the hottest, most sultry days of summer. They are a phenomenon of the northern hemisphere that usually falls between early July and early September but the actual dates vary greatly from region to region, depending on latitude and climate. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress.

The term "Dog Days" was used by the Greeks (see, e.g., Aristotle's Physics, 199a2), as well as the ancient Romans (who called these days caniculares dies (days of the dogs)) after Sirius (the "Dog Star"), the brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun.

Popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies" - Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813.

The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before or at the same time as sunrise (heliacal rising), which is no longer true owing to precession of the equinoxes. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that that star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.

second interview complete [23 Jul 2008|07:52pm]

theravenslizard
i had my second interview at starbucks today :) this time at the one on western ave and 57th... i will be working at the one on 41st it looks like. :) I really hope this works out, the girl at the starbucks on minnesota says i for sure have it, so we will see.

if so, i save 150 bucks a month on my daily starbucks habit because i get all the free coffee i want when i work,

a free lb of coffee every month which i can give away or sell because i cant drink hot coffee.

full benefits if i work 20 hrs a week or more

i also found out they do this thing if you volunteer at like a non profit organization they will pay you 10 bucks an hour for doing so.... which means i can go walk dogs or take pics of animals for second chance and get paid extra for it.... or to the humane society or do volunteer work for habitat for humanity or any of those things... I LOVE DOING THAT STUFF.... im a fuckin dork why do i like non profit organizations? because they are what they are... in it to help people, not to get fat fucking pockets!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are real.

i totally fucking rocked the interview. im stoked, hopefully someday i can manage a starbucks
i found out they are advocates for healthcare reform!!! that FUCKING RULES

i cant wait to start working there, piercings good this week, ive been averaging 50 bucks or more a day and its only wed, ive done 10 or so piercings.

i put my gas and electric on the budget, now just have to make sure to always pay them on time so they dont get taken off. having another job will help.

the apprenticeship is going well ... been doing drawing and coloring between peircings all week
i might try to tattoo tomorrow if its slow. was gonna try to today but i ended up doing the interview.

argh.... i think im gonna go do some stuff outside while i have time

i think my money problems will be over soon.... i think i will volunteer as much as possible to start with to earn extra to catch up on the house, angie can volunteer too so i wont have to worry about a babysitter for that and still get the 10 bucks an hour... that is so fucking cool
and ill get exercise walking dogs and stuff.... i just cant take animals home... unless its a temporary thing i can be a foster home for a troubled dog and train it... since i have dog training experience that would work.... some of the dogs are just horrible to walk and have no manners.... those are the ones i would love to work with. as long as i can kennel them when im not home.

ugh this is gonna be exciting.

i might not see ron as much... oh well

who said life was easy

its gonna be a lot of work but you know what? i think im on the right track... because just the other day i was thinking i wish i had extra money to live off of so i could volunteer... and this will make volunteering possible for me.

im psyched!

"Classic Hipster Racism" by nojojojo at The Angry Black Woman

YES.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Read the comments too.

Considering how much I like to play both dress-up and Scrabble, my friends have often been confused by how vehemently I hate on hipsters. ("And what do you even mean by 'hipster' anyway?") I've never been able to articulate succinctly what aggravates me so much about hipster culture, but the comments on that entry pretty much do it for me.

It's not about the aesthetic. I'll be the first to admit that your average twenty-something hipster is better dressed, more attractive, cleverer and infinitely cooler than I am. I'm serious. As a recovering Goth and, as mentioned above, dress-up afficionado, many elements of hipster fashion appeal to me. Musically, I actually like the sort of dreamy, talky, neo-shoegaze often associated with the scene; it's haunting and sonically interesting. And, certainly, my distaste is spiked with a residual drop of the outcast kid's resentment for the popular highschool crowd - especially since being uncool became the definition of cool and I still wasn't cool enough to pull it off. But really, if every boy in the universe decided to grow his bangs long and girls all walked around wearing cute chunky librarian glasses I would not complain.

Which is why it makes me so sad that hipsters suck so much. )

Maybe I'll get flamed for this, but since I'd be getting flamed by hipsters, that's fine with me. They're too cool to get offended anyway.
